How to Apply Paver Sealer

Got pavers somewhere on your property? These tessellating pieces are used to create stone surfaces such as driveways, patios, and sidewalks. Not only are these pavers durable, but they’re also a beautiful addition to your home or business. With the correct preventative care, you’ll be able to increase the lifespan of your pavers, keeping your property in the best-looking condition for a long time to come. The secret to doing so is paver sealer! In this blog, you’ll learn how to apply paver sealer, protect your pavers from damage, and keep them in stunning condition as long as possible.

We are Port City Power Washing, a locally owned business in Wilmington, NC, and we’ll walk you through the process. We are highly experienced in paver sealing, so remember, if you ever decide you don’t want to do this work on your own, you can always schedule an appointment with us.

Why Seal Pavers?

Why should you seal pavers at all? If you don’t, your pavers will be more prone to damage. For example, your pavers will be eroded by sources of friction. Particles of debris can grind against pavers, and even walking or driving on pavers can cause damage. It’s also possible that your pavers will be damaged by moisture. This happens anytime it rains, snows, or hails. Organic growths, such as moss, mold, and algae, store water and cause moisture damage to pavers, too.

Sealing pavers will reduce the chance of damage and actually save you money in the long run. Paver repairs aren’t cheap, after all. Plus, by avoiding paver repair, you won’t have to close off the area for weeks on end as you wait for the surface to be fixed.

Consider Pressure Washing First

So, you want to learn how to apply paver sealer. However, don’t put the cart ahead of the horse. We actually recommend that you pressure wash your pavers first. This is important because debris will prevent you from forming an even layer of sealer on your pavers. If you were to go ahead with the work despite this, the sealer would be more likely to crack, chip, or peel, forcing you to reseal the pavers sooner rather than later.

By pressure washing your pavers, you’ll eliminate dirt, moss, mold, pollen, and other unwanted substances from your pavers. That way, they look their best when you seal them! Don’t want to do your own pressure washing? No worries—reach out to Port City Power Washing, and we’ll happily pressure wash your pavers so you can take some time to relax instead.

What Do I Need For Paver Sealing?

What equipment will you need to seal your pavers? At Port City Power Washing, we are highly experienced in the paver sealing process, and we know everything you’ll need for your project. We’ve included a bulleted list for your convenience below.

  • Paver Sealer. Of course, you won’t be able to seal your pavers without a bucket of paver sealer. You can find this substance at your local hardware store. Remember, it’s better to have too much sealer than not enough.
  • Painting Supplies. You’ll be able to apply liquid sealer to your pavers as if it were paint. In fact, you’ll need a paint tray and paintbrushes. We recommend having a roller brush and a detail brush at the ready.
  • Drop Cloths/Tarps. It’s always a good idea to cover the areas near your pavers, especially landscaping. By draping drop cloths or tarps over these parts of your property, you’ll protect them from drips of liquid sealer.
  • Work Clothes. We highly recommend that you wear clothes that you don’t care about when sealing pavers. That way, you don’t have to toss out your favorite tee shirt after getting liquid sealer all over it.

How to Seal Pavers

Now that you’ve acquired all the necessary equipment, let’s learn how to apply paver sealer. The first thing you’ll want to do is remove all objects from the surface. This includes furniture, decorations, grills, and even vehicles. Please put them in a safe temporary location because after sealing, you won’t be able to use the paver surface for two days.

Next, open your bucket of paver sealer and pour a moderate amount of it into your paint tray. Then, using your roller brush, apply a thin layer of sealer to your pavers in a row-by-row pattern. Finally, use your detail brush to touch up the edges of the surface. Once you have fully coated the surface with paver sealer, you can put your equipment away because the only thing left to do now is wait.

Wait For Paver Sealer to Dry

Paver sealer will take up to forty-eight hours to dry. During this time, we advise that you steer clear of your pavers. Disturbing sealer while it is drying will compromise the quality of the results. The last thing you want is to mess things up when you’re so close to the finish line!

After two days, check on the pavers and ensure that the sealer has dried. If it has, great! That means you can use the surface again. Feel free to put all your belongings back where they belong and get back to normal life. Your paver sealer will serve you well for three to five years before resealing is required.
